Why Use Barn Cats

Barn cats are a valuable addition to barns/homesteads for several reasons:

These benefits make barn cats a worthwhile addition to any homestead, providing both practical and enjoyable companionship.

Acclimating barn cats involves a 4-6 week confinement period to help them adjust to their new environment safely and comfortably.

Importance of Acclimation

Acclimation is crucial for barn cats as it allows them to adjust to their new surroundings, reducing stress and the likelihood of them running away. This process helps them become familiar with the sights, sounds, and smells of their new home, ensuring they feel secure and safe.

Steps for Acclimating Barn Cats

Prepare a Secure Enclosure:

Use an XL dog crate or a secure enclosure in the barn or outbuilding where the cats will live. This space should be protected from extreme weather and provide enough room for food, water, and a litter box.

Confinement Period:

Keep the cats confined for 4-6 weeks. During this time, provide food, water, and a litter box. It's essential to create a comfortable environment with hiding spots, such as a small cardboard box, to help them feel secure.

Build Trust:

Spend time near the enclosure, talking softly to the cats and offering treats, such as wet food, to build trust. Use a consistent call or phrase when feeding to help them associate it with positive experiences.

Monitor Behavior:

After the confinement period, allow the cats to explore their new environment. Open the enclosure door during daylight hours and monitor their behavior. They may initially hide but will likely return to the area once they feel safe.

Gradual Release:

Once the cats are comfortable, you can gradually remove the enclosure and litter box, leaving food and water available. If they seem hesitant to explore, consider using a trail camera to monitor their activity and ensure they are eating.

Additional Considerations

Ensure the barn or shelter is safe from predators and has adequate hiding spots for the cats to retreat to if they feel threatened.

It's beneficial to have multiple cats, as they often thrive in social groups, which can enhance their acclimation success.

By following these steps, you can help your new barn cats acclimate effectively, ensuring they feel at home and can fulfill their role in controlling pests on your property.
